General Purpose
:
Responsible for overseeing financial operations, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting. Accountable for strategic financial guidance to support business operations of the Michigan Dental Association and related entities, including the for-profit subsidiary, MDA Health Plan, MDA Foundation, and Dental PAC. Establishes, documents, and maintains financial policies and procedures to mitigate risk; ensures efficient, effective, and up-to-date accounting operations; leads development of annual budgets; produces timely and accurate financial reports and unqualified audit reports. Files all required tax and financial reports. Manages banking and investment advisors within established policy. Ensures compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, tax, and state/federal regulations. Serves as an advisor for the organization's staff and boards on financial matters. Key liaison to entity treasurers and financial committees. Supervises accounting and central services staff. Strong leadership, analytical skills, and a deep understanding of financial principles are essential for this role.
Essential Job Functions*
Planning
· Collaborate in formulating strategic and business plans as content area expert in finance, ensuring all financial activities are in alignment with the plan
· Develop financial and tax strategies
· Develop performance measures and monitoring systems to support strategy
· Monitor internal and external trends; anticipate potential impacts on the association and recommend action to ensure short and long-term financial health
· Maintain and monitor plan for building management, anticipate and budget for repair or replacement of building components, systems, equipment, and furnishings
· Manage the capital request and budgeting processes
Accounting
Preparation of House of Delegate reports annually
Reviews and approves all monthly reconciliations completed by the Finance Manager
Final review of all audit documentation for annual external audit and oversee the overall audit process
Review, approval, and filing of annual 990 and any other tax documents
Monitors status and effectiveness of internal control processes
Maintains cursory knowledge of all accounting processes and tasks
Oversight and review of payroll submissions
Finance department liaison to program service departments, as assigned
Monthly Donated Dental FSR approvals in eGrams
Back up to Finance Manager
Develop and manage accounting policies and practices
Establish accounting standards and practices
Direct the preparation of accounting and financial reports and analyses
Establish, administer and review the financial internal control system
Manage all aspects of the bookkeeping functions including Accounts Payable/ Accounts Receivable/General Ledger/Bank Reconciliation and Collection for the MDA and all related entities
Oversee funding, including monitoring cash balances and forecasts, arranging for financing, and managing investments
Manage the budget preparation process
Administer the employee benefits programs
Ensure appropriate volunteer oversight of finances and report key performance indicators on quarterly or annual basis
Review, approve, and produce monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports for MDA and its subsidiaries
Manage all accounting department service providers
Operations
· Participate in the executive management team
· Manage the accounting and supervise accounting department staff
Secondary Accountabilities*
· Oversees special projects as assigned by the Executive Director
· Performs duties and responsibilities to related entities as directed by the Executive Director
Qualifications :
General Educational/Experiential Development
Master's degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience and 10+ years of progressively responsible experience for a major company or division of a large corporation.
MBA in Finance and CPA preferred
Previous experience in nonprofit financial management preferred, but not required

Strong analytical and process management skills
Experience in working effectively with a board of directors
Previous supervisory experience, ability to manage and measure work
Expertise in third-party benefits plan administration

Comments:
· This position is salaried and no overtime pay is provided. Additional work hours are expected to complete projects/requests in a timely manner may require overtime, for example during annual session.
· The employee in this position may be required to spend some time performing duties and responsibilities related to MDA subsidiary functions and activities.
