We are seeking a committed and skilled Staff Attorney to join the Administrative Law Unit. Our organization has been providing transformative civil legal assistance to low-income and marginalized residents throughout the state since 1911. By focusing on safeguarding basic human needs and rights, our team empowers clients to achieve stability, independence, and a more prosperous life. Our dedicated team of over 90 paralegals and staff attorneys plays a critical role in leveling the legal playing field, ensuring equal access to justice, and uplifting thousands of economically disadvantaged individuals across Maryland annually.
Role Summary:
The Staff Attorney will be responsible for a range of duties from initial client intake to representation in administrative proceedings and court related to entitlements and benefits managed by agencies such as the Social Security Administration, and Maryland's Departments of Labor, Human Services, and Health. This position offers the flexibility of remote administrative hearings and the possibility of hybrid in-office and remote work arrangements.
Key Responsibilities:
Evaluate client eligibility and provide appropriate referrals.
Conduct thorough interviews, investigations, and legal research.
Offer counsel based on research outcomes and devise client-specific strategies.
Draft and prepare legal documents including pleadings, briefs, and memoranda.
Represent clients in negotiations, hearings, trials, and appeals.
Engage with community groups and participate in outreach activities.
Maintain detailed records in our case management system.
Commit to ongoing professional development.
Qualifications:
Licensed to practice in Maryland, or eligible for admission via another jurisdiction.
J.D. from an accredited law school.
1-3 years of relevant legal experience, which may include clerkships or fellowships.
Proficiency in using modern technology including Office 365 and related applications.
Excellent skills in research, critical thinking, writing, and teamwork.
Work Environment:
This role primarily operates in an office environment but also includes remote work capabilities. Regular interactions occur via various communication platforms and occasionally in community settings.
