Details of the offer

To design and implement unit based orientation and in-service education programs. To assess, meet and maintain the orientation and in-service educational needs of the nursing staff. To assist in the design and implementation of staff development programs. To maintain orientation, education, and competency records. Responsible for maintaining current professional knowledge and competencies by contributing to the advancement of the practice of nursing at the unit level.
To provide nursing care and support to the adult dialysis patient. To maintain clinical expertise within the unique population requiring specialized renal therapies. To provide comprehensive nursing care to adult patients before, during and after procedures in the INU. Utilizing the nursing process, provide nursing care to facilitate the attainment and maintenance of an optimal level of health for nephrology patients and their families. To collaborate with other health care team members to provide continuity in patient care.
A. Clinical Practice
1. Provide direct patient care (to demonstrate the clinical nursing role, act as a role model and assist in monitoring unit practices 50% of the time and hospital business 50% of the time (direct patient care-hospital business ratio may fluctuate during times of orientation, unit staff needs and deadlines)
2. Participate in Quality Assurance and Performance Assurance (QAPI)
3. Independently assess patient status, anticipate and detect changes and deliver care accordingly
4. Provide clinical expertise regarding specialized renal therapies to other team members in various clinical settings
5. Assist with non-tunneled access placement
6. Aseptically set up, prime, initiate and manage various specialized renal therapies including dialysis, CRRT, PIRRT and ultra-filtration
7. Safely administer blood products, antibiotics and other intravenous medications into the dialysis circuit
8. Monitor, troubleshoot and evaluate the integrity of all renal therapy circuits to optimize the patient?s hemodynamic stability
9. Safely and effectively manage planned and emergent disruptions of specialized renal therapies
10. Discontinue and infuse specialized renal therapy circuits as needed
11. Monitor conductivity and electrolyte balance of dialysate solution
12. Perform and monitor daily/weekly routine tasks as assigned by the charge nurse
13. Possess knowledge of water treatment systems and troubleshoot alarm conditions
14. Operate point of care equipment to determine blood glucose and electrolyte levels
15. Complete patient safety checks by verifying every patient is wearing an arm band and all medication and tubing are labeled appropriately
16. Prior to Registered Nurses leaving the hospital for the day, resolve all discrepancies in the Omnicell
17. Complete all required patient care documentation
18. Assist in research studies and quality assurance activities
B. Nursing Educator Practice
1. Attend and participate in monthly hospital wide Educational Nurse Coordinator meetings
2. Participate in central nurse orientation
3. Investigate, design, evaluate and modify orientation, in-services and ongoing educational programs, as necessary
4. Identify and assess the needs of the unit staff orientation and in-service educational programs
5. Assist in the development and acquisition of unit resource materials
6. Develop and maintain new staff orientation
7. Orient and train new staff
8. Conduct individualized and group learning programs for nursing staff
9. Support and educate staff with hospital wide initiatives
10. Assist in developing and maintaining new unit/hospital policies and protocols utilizing evidence based information
11. Develop and maintain a preceptor program to provide consistency for all preceptors and orientees
12. Document professional educational activities in the electronic eLearning system for annual employee review
13. Participate in activities to promote own continued learning and professional growth
14. Assess staff readiness to learn and tailor teaching to meet individual needs by allowing adequate time to discuss progress, voice questions and verbalize anxieties
15. Initiate and implement educational needs of the staff to maintain nursing practice standards
16. Utilize discretion and appropriate judgment regarding sensitive and or confidential matters
C. Leadership
1. Function as a leader by encouraging positive attitudes and fostering staff discussions in a professional manner
2. Function as and precept other Registered Nurse staff to the Charge Nurse role
3. Promote quality patient care in a collaborative, cost effective manner by continually assessing the diverse needs of the unit and implementing change accordingly
4. Function as an independent decision-maker and delegate responsibilities when necessary
1. Remain competent in MM and unit-based competencies, to include all aspects of specialized renal therapies, and knowledge of approved INU procedures.
2. Maintain competency of telemetry interpretation
3. Contribute to the professional growth of peers and other interdisciplinary team members as it relates to dialysis access
4. Demonstrate a willingness to share knowledge, both formally and informally
E. Professional Development/Educational Standard for Patients and Families
1. Assess patient/families understanding of disease processes including medications, diet, and treatment modality options
2. Assess patient/families readiness to learn and tailor teaching to meet individual needs by allowing adequate time to discuss progress, voice questions and verbalize anxieties
3. Develop educational materials for patients regarding care and access
4. Make appropriate referrals to other resources for assistance in the teaching/learning process (i.e. social work, National Kidney Foundation, etc.)
5. Document patients? education and evaluation of learning appropriately
F. Professionalism
1. Able to make appropriate independent nursing decisions and delegate responsibilities as necessary
2. Promote quality patient care in a collaborative, cost effective manner by assessing the diverse needs of the unit and sharing suggestions for improvement with unit leadership
3. Promote teamwork by functioning as a resource to peers, other units and various team members involved in the care of patients requiring renal therapies
4. Communicate with appropriate privileged provider and other team members as patient condition warrants or suggestions which may enhance patient outcomes
5. Effectively communicate patient handoff information as well as any deviation from standard treatment with both sending and receiving hospital units

F. Ability to push, lift and assist patients as well as push, lift and move heavy equipment.
1. Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan
2. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certified
3. Minimum three (3) years current adult acute dialysis
4. Minimum two (2) years adult acute dialysis preceptor experience
5. Demonstrated ability to perform literature search(es) to be used in the implementation of evidenced based practice.
