Job summary
The school nurse is responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating and evaluating school health services within the context of the Coordinated School Health Program Model.They serve in nursing roles of program manager/coordinator, case manager/direct care provider, educator and counselor, and collaborator/advocate.The position is within Student Services at Malpass Corner Elementary.

Responsibilities
• Collect comprehensive data pertinent to the student's health or situation• Analyze assessment data to determine nursing diagnosis or barriers to learning• Identify expected outcomes for individual student or situation• Develop an individualized plan to attain expected outcomes• Implement the identified plan through coordination of care, teaching, and ongoing assessment and evaluation• Evaluate progress towards attainment of outcomes• Enhance the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice• Attain knowledge and competency that reflects current school nursing practice• Evaluate own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and guidelines• Interact with and contribute to the professional development of peers and school personnel• Collaborate with the student, family, school staff, and others in the conduct of professional nursing practice• Integrate ethical provisions in all areas of practice• Integrate research findings into practice• Consider factors related to safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact on practice in planning and delivering school nursing services• Provide leadership in the professional practice setting and profession• Manage school health services
Requirements
• Knowledge of community, pediatric/adolescent nursing, and public health/community health nursing• Skills in health education, counseling, mental health, crisis intervention, and case management• Understanding of applicable laws, regulations, and standards pertaining to school nursing practice• Knowledge of special education legislation and services• Familiarity with family theory, assessment, and intervention• Strong leadership, networking, and collaboration skills• Ethnic and cultural sensitivity and competence• Knowledge of contemporary health and psychosocial issues• Understanding of health care delivery systems and integrated health care concepts• Ability to identify health-related barriers to learning• Experience in managing and evaluating school health programs• Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise the work of others• Good judgment in appraising situations• Strong prioritization and triaging abilities• Effective communication and relationship-building skills• Accurate record keeping and interpretation• Experience in supervising specialized clinical services and providing associated health teaching• Experience in medication administration and health assessments• Ability to help assure a safe, nurturing school environment• Registered nurse license in North Carolina• Minimum of 3 years RN nursing experience in pediatric/adolescent health and/or community health nursing• National Board Certification for School Nurses within 3 years of hire• Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree
