Details of the offer

Position Specific Summary Dr. Richard Smith and his Lab believe that this research intern will be an invaluable asset to the lab. Their passion for science, dedication, and drive for excellence have impressed us, and I am confident they will make significant contributions to ongoing and upcoming projects, such as variant classification in patients with complement-mediated diseases.
Responsibilities: As the research intern gains experience with laboratory techniques and procedures, they will be expected to:
Collaborate autonomously with other laboratory members and gradually increase their level of scientific duties, including experimental design and data analysis, as well as preparation of materials for abstracts, reports, grant applications, and manuscripts. Perform research activities based on protocols developed by the principal investigator and other research team members. Plan and perform experimental procedures while ensuring fidelity to protocols. Read and review articles as directed, developing and maintaining a working knowledge of the field and project concepts through familiarity with scientific literature and attendance at internal and external meetings, seminars, workshops, and conferences when appropriate. Search, compile, and critically evaluate scientific literature as their individual skills develop. Conduct experiments, investigations, and evaluations, troubleshooting and proposing modifications to existing protocols or developing new protocols with other researchers or the principal investigator. Handle human DNA, serum, and plasma samples, as well as carry out molecular biology techniques, including DNA and RNA extraction, RT-PCR, real-time RT-PCR, and gel electrophoresis. Collect, record, organize, and analyze data as their skills develop, and become familiar with basic spreadsheets and statistical concepts and software. Present research results at lab meetings and other internal and external meetings. Independently arrange and plan daily, weekly, and monthly activities to prepare for and perform experiments, with minimal help from the principal investigator. Track research project progress and regularly communicate with researchers and the principal investigator both verbally and through regular written updates. Develop and monitor quality control testing of equipment as necessary, and assist in the preparation, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory and facility equipment. Adhere to safety and compliance guidelines to ensure a safe working environment. May provide training, direction, assignments, and feedback to other employees.
