The General Internal Medicine Practice at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is seeking a license Nurse Practitioner Fellow to participate in an intensive 6-month training program designed to provide advanced didactic education and focused clinical experiences so that the graduates have skills and knowledge to provide high-quality care in General Internal Medicine. The Nurse Practitioner Fellowship Program also provides a means to help transition the nurse practitioner into a career in internal medicine in order to better prepare them to provide exceptional patient care in this field.
The Nurse Practitioner Fellow will work in a team-based model of primary care to improve access to care for our primary care practice, as well as improve the quality of care of our practice's Medicare patient population via the Maryland Primary Care Program (MDPCP).
Candidates must have the ability to perform comprehensive history and physical examinations, establish accurate diagnoses, order pertinent laboratory tests, and implement appropriate management plans. The NP fellow will write orders, prescribe medications, perform and monitor diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within their scope of practice. They will participate in patient education initiatives and coordinate patient care through consultation with multidisciplinary teams. They will work in collaboration with faculty, fellows, residents and other nurse practitioners and must be able to work both independently and as part of a team. Candidates must possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, demonstrate a high degree of self-motivation and have a basic understanding of computers and word processing.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Perform direct patient care in an ambulatory setting for primary care patients (independently after period of training)
Order, perform and interpret laboratory and radiology tests within scope of professional practice.
Prescribe medications including controlled substances to the extent delegated and licensed.
Consult with Bayview General Internal Medicine faculty physicians as needed.
Assist physicians in management of patients between visits via telephone and EMR encounters.
Assist physicians with complex diagnoses or medication management (i.e., diabetes management)
Prepare and maintain accurate patient records, charts, and documents to support sound medical practice and reimbursement for services provided.
Comply with applicable laws and regulations with respect to collaborative agreements.
Triages incoming patient telephone calls and emails, ensuring correspondence in a timely manner.
Retrieves diagnostic results, coordinates physician sign-off of results, and calls patients with results according to the direction of the Center physicians.
Helps to complete prior authorization forms with relevant medical data and test results.
Answers questions from patients regarding physician instructions, medications, prescription refills, testing results, and/or other aspects of clinical care.
Assesses and/or manages follow-up plans, specific to the patient's diagnosis.
Regularly gives effective, complete and accurate instructions regarding good health maintenance including disease prevention and management according to department guidelines and under the supervision of a physician.
Collaborate with organizations and payors to maintain continuity of care. This may include facilitation of letters of medical necessity for accommodations, appeals and prior authorizations for access to treatment, FMLA, Social Security, short- and long-term disability forms.
Coordinate with in-house pharmacy and outside manufacturer reps, maintain patient education materials and communicate updates and changes to patients and providers.
Consistently requests consultations with appropriate departments when necessary.
Assumes responsibility and accountability for time management, professional relationships and interpersonal interactions.
Assumes responsibility for own professional development and remains current in clinical practice by attending relevant continuing education.
Maintains up to date knowledge of the EMR and other hospital-based software.
Other duties may be assigned by the Center co-directors to ensure an efficient office that will assist the Division in fulfilling its mission.
Minimum Qualifications
Master of Science degree-prepared Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner; required to complete JHBMC credentialing process prior to start date.
Successful completion of the national certification examination and certification as a nurse practitioner. NP licensure in the state of Maryland.
Approval of the Board of Physician Quality/Maryland Board of Nursing for the written signed delegation agreement
Familiarity with regulations and standards governing NPs in the state of Maryland.
Controlled substance license.
Preferred Qualifications
Five years of direct patient care in internal medicine, family practice or medicine sub-specialty
Experience with EPIC preferred
Demonstrated ability for self-direction and initiation required.
Strong oral and written communication skills required.
Demonstrated ability to function as a leader and team player required.
Basic computer skills required.
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications
Current Maryland State NP Licensure.
Completion of the JHU credentialing process.
Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time.
Finger Dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
Ability to see within normal parameters.
Ability to hear within normal range.
Ability to lift 15 pounds.
Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
**Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date** Physical Requirements:

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
