PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT Job description statements are: intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees assigned to this job title; not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required; and subject to change, as approved by the City Manager. Job Summary Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in executing maintenance and repair of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment, both gasoline and diesel powered.
Examples of work performed: Performs general overall repair work on light and heavy trucks, gasoline and diesel motors, tractors, bulldozers, graders and other vehicles and mechanical equipment; performs such repair and maintenance work as grinding valves, replacing rings and bearings, repairing transmissions, replacing universal joints, repairing differentials, relining brakes, repairing and replacing clutches, rebuilding starters, rebuilding generators, rebuilding vehicles and equipment such as changing oil and filter, tuning engines and repairing and replacing flat tires; maintains shop records and reports; performs related work as required.
Required Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of standard practices and equipment of the diesel and gasoline mechanic trade Knowledge of the principles and operation of gasoline and diesel engines
Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of heavy trucks and construction equipment Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
Ability to perform a variety of repair and maintenance tasks Ability to follow oral and written instructions
Ability to use the necessary tools and the required skills Ability to operate a variety of light and heavy equipment Ability to perform manual labor
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees
Qualifications High school education or equivalent and valid TN driver's license. Must possess or be able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six ((6) months from date of employment. Three years' experience in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment preferred.
Essential Functions Frequently lifts items weighing 50 lbs. or more. Requires the ability to perform physical work, often in somewhat uncomfortable positions such as bent over vehicle fenders, grills and other auto body parts, or in a reclining or stooped, stretched or twisted posture while working on equipment. Pushes heavy equipment tires weighing several hundred pounds. Subject to call out during emergencies. Works in garage area with infrequent exposure to exhaust fumes and other fumes and odors, organic and inorganic.
