Position SummaryThe Honors Academic Advisor and Retention Specialist reports to the Director of the Weber Honors College. Responsibilities include developing and implementing advising and/ or programs that facilitate growth in the areas of scholarship, personal and leadership development, citizenship, mentorship, and campus engagement. This specialist also provides guidance and mentoring, through programming and advising efforts to students enrolled in the Weber Honors College at SDSU; including out-of-state, international, and underrepresented students. Evening and weekend work are sometimes part of this position.This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.Department SummaryThe Division of Faculty Advancement and Student Success (DFASS) fosters inclusive academic excellence through support for faculty careers, professional development, and community engagement and student academic support and enrichment, including the Weber Honors College.For more information regarding the Division of Faculty Advancement and Student Success Department, click here .Education and ExperienceEquivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field; including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related. Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required. A Master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.Key QualificationsKnowledge of Honors Program/College ideals and goals.Experience with recruitment and retention of high-achieving undergraduate students, including those from diverse backgrounds, underrepresented populations, and out-of-state.Experience facilitating, advising, and mentoring undergraduate student engagement and retention in an internship, professional development leadership, service, research, and study abroad opportunities.Experience developing specialized learning experiences that facilitate postbaccalaureate success, including workshops and networking opportunities.Experience in recruitment and outreach activities, including event planning, for prospective and current students.Master's degree in student personnel, higher education/student affairs, counseling, or related field preferred.Knowledge of a variety of academic disciplines in terms of course requirements and career paths.Experience developing peer advising and mentoring programs.Compensation and BenefitsStarting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,276 per month.Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
