What You Will Do

The Radiation Protection Division has a need for an operational Health Physicist (HP) supporting LANL programs and projects at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) at Science and Technology Operations (STO) deployed group. Reporting to an RP Field Support (RP-FS) deputy group leader, the operational HP is responsible for ensuring the implementation of the LANL Radiation Protection program while supporting work execution. The successful candidate will: investigate radiological hazards in the full range of the LANL RP program; assist in developing, implementing, and evaluating administrative and engineered radiological controls; assist in developing, implementing, and evaluation of workplace monitoring programs for effectiveness of radiological controls; participate in pre-and post-work planning activities; assist in the review and development of corrective actions associated with radiological incidents and RP assessments (internal and external); and help ensure that RP concepts are understood by program, operations, and RP personnel and incorporated in local procedures, policies, and training.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Health Physicist Level 3 ($112,000 - $186,700):
• Advanced experience with the development and implementation of programs to meet 10 CFR 835, 49 CFR and part 20 requirements.
• Advanced experience managing diverse radiation safety issues.
• Advanced experience with radiological controls and the surveillance of related safety measures and requirements. Advanced experience responding to radiological incidents and emergencies.
• Advanced knowledge of the Laboratory's radiological safety policies, practices, and procedures.
• Advanced knowledge of legal requirements and environmental impacts affecting radiological safety/protection in area of expertise; thorough knowledge of legal requirements in other areas of radiation safety/protection.
• Advanced knowledge of health physics in area of expertise; comprehensive knowledge of health physics in areas outside of expertise.
• Advanced experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting radiological safety/protection.
• Advanced skills to conceptualize and communicate major elements of radiological safety/protection to both technical and non- technical personnel.
• Advanced skills in the preparation and presentation of radiological safety/protection reports.
Health Physicist Level 3 Education Required:
Position typically requires a bachelor's degree and a minimum 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.
Desired Qualifications:
• Working knowledge of Los Alamos Laboratory's radiation protection policies, practices, and procedures.
• Working knowledge of external radiation exposure control and contamination control, including containment tents and glove bags.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• At least one year working in a Research and Development environment
• Certification as a Health Physicist (HP-3)
• Ability to obtain a Q clearance.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
