Job Description
Objective: The " GDU Lead" owns every detail that affects the gilt from the day she walks off the trailer into quarantine until the day a catheter is inserted.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Overall management of GDU including but not limited to:
Maximize Feed Intake
Feeder management – daily adjustments
Minimize stress events
Water – flow and availability
Feed ration management
Ventilation Management
Environment assessment - laying patterns, humidity, cleanliness
Set temp vs. actual
Air – flow, speed, and exchange
Controller knowledge
Health Management
Threshold communication
Treatment identification
Medication/vaccination schedule execution
Overall Flow Management
Weekly targets – mortality, removals, HNS
Replacement rate, selection rate and timing
Stocking density/square footage
Nursery management
Intensive monitoring
Incoming preparation
Inventory and Record Keeping
Weekly inventory tracking
Daily movements into gestation barn, HNS events, mortality, and culls
Gilt Entry Protocol – ear tagging and recording within 7 days of arrival
GDU Snapshot
Heat detection
Boar exposure management
HNS row management.
Understanding breed eligible targets.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
Depending on layout/size of farm – may cross over time/labor in gestation barn or other areas of the farm.
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS
Education: High School Diploma or GED Preferred
Experience: 1 year pig experience preferred
Training: Completion of Pipestone Emerging Leader - GDU
Work
Environment: Agricultural swine environment in rural area
Noise levels that require hearing protection in some areas
Gestation, farrowing, and small swine care processes
Physical
Requirements: Standing, walking and ability to be on feet 8 to 10 hours per day
Frequent bending, reaching, squatting and kneeling
Frequent use of one or both hands/arms to grasp or pull
Frequent lifting of objects weighing 3-20 pounds
Occasional bending while pulling and/or lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or requiring up to 50 pounds of force to move
Occasional bending while pulling and/or lifting objects weighing up to 100 pounds or requiring up to 100 pounds of force to move with the assistance of another person as needed
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
Must be able to print and/or write legibly
Additional
Requirements: Must be able to work minimum of every third weekend
Must have reliable transportation to get to work and attend meetings
