The successful candidate will be responsible for serving as the DD for DVR (Bethesda and Poolesville) and as a senior advisor to the DVR Director.  The DD will assist the Director with the planning, development, implementation and management of the daily operations of a major animal resources program to ensure high quality veterinary care, research support, regulatory compliance, and Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International, (AAALAC)  accreditation.  The candidate will have direct oversight of the business office staff and functions, including budget development and execution, rate setting, billing, contract management and development of MOUs and Interagency agreements.  The candidate also provides oversight and direction to the Behavior and Enrichment  Coordinator, the Assistant Directors for the Animal Resources Support Branch, ARSB (Bethesda and Poolesville) and the Chief, Diagnostic and Research Services Branch (DRSB), with responsibility for coordinating and directing the work of scientific, professional, technical and support personnel. The Deputy Director reports to the DVR Director to ensure the success of the mission of DVR: "… to contribute to the advancement of NIH biomedical research mission by providing excellence in animal care and specialized research services to support the NIH intramural research mission. DVR is a centrally managed AAALAC International accredited program that is responsive, efficient, and accountable to the NIH researchers' needs. "
Qualifications for the Deputy Director include a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, i.e., Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD), obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education as well a strong understanding of business and budget practices and proven communication and analytic skills. An individual with a combined DVM/MBA degree or a DVM with at least five years of management experience is preferred.
Graduates of veterinary schools not AVMA accredited must have Education Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates certification. It is preferable that candidates be Diplomates of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM), or hold a graduate degree in laboratory animal sciences, and be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state.  Candidates must also have experience as a supervisor/leader of at least one component of a laboratory animal medicine program. Experience in overseeing animal facilities is favored. Leadership experience and a strong ability to work in a team is also preferred.
