The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) seeks a Communications Officer to promote CNAS' innovative national security research to media and external audiences. The Communications Officer will lead the Center's day-to-day communications with reporters and journalists, draft press releases, identify opportunities for media engagement, pitch op-eds, and track media coverage, among other responsibilities. The Communications Officer will also work closely with other members of the Communications team to develop, produce, and implement events and digital media campaigns. This position will report to the CNAS Director of Communications and is part of the communications team.
Ideal candidates will be proactive, creative, organized, and responsive to the demands of the news cycle. They will have an eye for detail, be an excellent writer, and be proficient in a variety of digital communications formats and platforms.
ResponsibilitiesThe following is an overview of primary responsibilities. Other tasks may be required, and responsibilities will vary over time.
Work with journalists and CNAS experts to manage day-to-day media relations activities, including answering journalist inquiries, pitching interviews and op-eds, and maintaining CNAS media lists.Draft, produce, and distribute press releases, press notes, and media advisories for CNAS reports, announcements, and reactions to major news events.Collaborate with colleagues across the Center to identify and produce innovative, newsworthy programs and events that highlight research projects.Collaborate with other members of the communications team to develop and implement events, digital media engagement, and congressional outreach.Work closely with colleagues on the publications team to plan and implement the promotion of CNAS research products.Track CNAS media coverage and build media reports for CNAS experts and programs.Maintain and update CNAS media lists.Pitch op-eds by CNAS experts.Develop and implement media relations strategies for CNAS initiatives.Prepare CNAS experts with research and background materials before major interviews.Assist the CNAS Director of Communications with media training for CNAS experts.Manage media attendees at CNAS events.Cultivate and manage relationships with journalists and producers covering issues critical to CNAS.Manage Congressional outreach, build and maintain contact lists, and track CNAS engagements on Capitol Hill.Qualifications and RequirementsBachelor's degree is required, preferably in the field of public relations, journalism, communications, marketing, international affairs, or a related field.Minimum 3+ years of professional communications experience, preferably in national security, government, academia, technology, or similar settings.Superb writing skills and experience drafting and editing press releases and other external communications.Knowledge of traditional print outlets, television news outlets, and digital media.Ability to work independently under tight deadlines and collaboratively across programs.Capacity to research and draft detailed media plans.Experience writing and/or editing newsletters, op-eds, academic articles, or similar publications.An eye for detail and excellent proofreading skills.Familiarity with national security, foreign policy, and/or related issues and how they are covered by print, broadcast, and digital media.Flexibility in schedule to work occasional evening events and weekends when required by the news cycle.Legal right to work in the United States.About CNASThe Center for a New American Security develops bold, innovative, and bipartisan national security and defense policies that promote and protect American interests and values.
