BWXT is currently seeking a Civil Structural Engineer for its Advanced Technologies location in Lynchburg, VA! BWXT is People Strong, Innovation Driven - be part of BWXT's innovation hub. BWXT's Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers.

Job Description / Duties: Design complex structural systems related to facility infrastructure and equipment.  Perform structural evaluations and design for foundations, structural components, below the hook lifting, etc. Support production, equipment, and facilities upgrades, improvements, or new installations. Coordinate design interfaces with mechanical and electrical disciplines. Work alongside other facility engineers, contractors, and maintenance groups. Create design models and detailed drawings using CAD software and other design methods. Develop engineering calculations and specifications in accordance with nuclear and commercial standards. Support engineering procurement efforts. Analyze structural design of concrete, steel, and aluminum structures using applicable design codes. Analyze natural phenomena loading on structures (seismic, wind, precipitation, thermal, etc.). Analyze soil mechanics to determine soil loading on structures and structural settlement analysis. Job Qualifications / Requirements: A Bachelor's degree in engineering is required. A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience is required. Must be a registered Professional Engineer. Must have a strong mechanical aptitude. Must have high quality workmanship. Must be able to provide clear, concise, accurate, and timely written and verbal communication. Experience in application of natural phenomena loads on structures is required. Must be a strong team player with the ability to develop effective relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers. Previous experience with industrial/facility infrastructure design and industrial equipment is required. Must have demonstrable skills and knowledge of CAD. Must possess knowledge of creating shop drawings utilizing CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks). Must possess knowledge of Concrete Analysis (ACI 318-19). Must possess knowledge of Structural Steel Analysis (AISC Steel Construction Manual).  Must possess knowledge of wind and seismic calculations (ASCE 7-22 Minimum Design Loads and Criteria for Buildings and Structures). Must be able to demonstrate superior written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. Must be highly self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail. Must be able to travel ( Must be a U.S. citizen. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required. Additional Desired Skillsets: Microstation CAD, SolidWorks and/or Revit knowledge. Previous experience with industrial/facility infrastructure design and industrial equipment. A working knowledge of 29 CFR 1910 OSHA General Industry Regulations and Standard.  Experience in nuclear plant licensing applications. Knowledge of ACI-349 nuclear concrete structures. Knowledge of ANSI/AISC N690 steel safety related nuclear structures. Knowledge of ASCE Seismic Analysis Standards (ASCE-4, ASCE-43) Knowledge of ASME Section III, Div 2 containment analysis experience. Experience performing seismic analysis of structures, tanks, piping using response spectra or time history response analysis methods. Experience with structural analysis programs (ANSYS, GTSTRUDL, SAP2000, RISA, RAM Connection). Experience performing impact and impulsive loading analyses. A Master's degree in structural engineering. Pay: $92,000.00- $142,000.00
The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $92,000.00 and $142,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,' unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
