JOB SUMMARY This position is responsible for performing a variety of tasks requiring initiative and independent judgement to dispense career information to counselors, middle and high school students and parents. This position coordinates the scheduling of events involving career selection and guidance such as symposiums, speakers, job fairs, and conferences in order to maintain students, accurate, up-to-date knowledge of options available in the career field. In addition, this position serves as a workforce development position that is responsible for case management, provision of specific services preparing youth for postsecondary training and / or employment and completion of administrative duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
Provide supervision of student activity in the Career and College Center (C & C Center); provide guidance for research activities and selection of brochures, books, labor market information and other materials. Orient students in the availability of financial aid, apprenticeship programs, scholarships, and career selection processes. Make available standard forms for student use, such as college, scholarship and social security number applications; provide instruction for correct completion and submission. Publicize local job openings and assist with application screening and referral of applicants. Identify new resource materials by reading professional journals, resource catalogs, and other sources; order new materials. Host informational nights for parents and students; Scholarship Night, Financial Aid Night, Junior Parent Night; invite guest speakers, publicize; provide materials for attendees. Coordinate a Career Day in partnership with local agencies and workforce partners for the instruction and development of students. Assist in coordinating College Application Week (CAW), invite college representative to help host workshops for college applications, recruit and train volunteers to help student's complete college applications. Compose announcements for C & C Center activities; contact students or parents to inform them of agendas. Design and update bulletin boards for the C & C Center. Host representatives from various colleges and arrange presentations to students. Manage applications of students and mentors, recruitment of students and mentors, training of volunteers, background checks of mentors, matching of student/mentors, tracking of hours of volunteers and ASPIRE/Naviance activities, reports to fulfill grant requirements, supervise student/mentor meetings. Cooperative Work Experience: Manages applications, evaluations, record-keeping of students receiving credit for employment. Works with counselor(s) and other C & C Center staff to prepare an annual report of C & C Center activities and compiles data for presentation of other reports as requested. Coordinate workforce partners visits, mock interviews, and job shadows in support of the school's career exploration program. Serve as liaison for the student career information computer applications. Coordinates and supervises summer internships. Coordinates military, apprenticeship, volunteer and trade school opportunities. Provide a variety of transition activities and services to students, including development of work experiences, job shadows, and career exploration activities as well as development of paid employment consistent with the student's vocational goals. Develops contacts in business community to promote School-To-Work program concepts. Administer food handler's test and National Career Readiness Certificate (Work Keys) to students. Research new career developments in newspapers, periodicals and web-based searches; develop improved familiarity with the materials in the C & C Center by personal study as time allows. Maintain an inventory of office supplies for the C & C Center; order materials, check-in and shelve upon arrival. Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required. Other related duties may be assigned. MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Marginal duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
Attends in-service trainings. Attends staff meetings. Assist in maintenance of monthly bulletin boards and displays. Moves furniture or other library equipment. Reports issues to authorities as necessary, animal control, suspicious activity etc. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: § Associate's degree or higher (attach diploma); OR
§ Completion of two years post-secondary study consisting of 72 credit hours, 48 semester units (attach transcripts); OR
§ High school diplomas or General Education Diploma (GED) AND equivalent combination of education and experience to satisfactorily meet the expectations of the position.
§ Meet a rigorous standard of quality, and can demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment or para-professional certificate program.
Experience: § Three (3) years of increasingly responsible, closely related work experience.
Certificates, Licenses, Registration & Other Requirements: § Ability to obtain and hold a valid Oregon Driver's License, Food Handler's Card, First Aid/CPR card and pass SafeSchools training modules as assigned.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Related experience in an educational setting.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES May be acquired through education, training, and/or experience.
Knowledge of: District policies and procedures; BOLI laws pertaining to students; Social Security laws and benefits; maintenance of student records; modern office practices and procedures; letter writing, correct language usage; telephone and record keeping/filing systems; computer hardware and software programs and their usage; modern office equipment; effective supervision and behavior management methods; attendance, grading, and homework procedures; safety and first aid practices and procedures.
Skills to: apply student de-escalation strategies in a variety of unique situations and environments; transition smoothly from one task to another, through multiple environments within a school day.
Ability to: understand and apply District and school policies and procedures; maintain appropriate office appearance and attire; greet stakeholders; maintain regular and acceptable attendance and punctuality; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work and from diverse backgrounds; maintain records; utilize keyboarding skills commensurate with the required functions for this position; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; utilize appropriate grammar and spelling when corresponding, make mathematical calculations accurately; follow oral and written instructions; accurately research various information and prepare related reports.
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD & SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES No assigned permanent staff to supervise. May train and provide work directions, as directed by supervisor, to appropriate staff and volunteers.
Physical Effort: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move 25 pounds and occasionally maneuver up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus and peripheral vision.
Working Conditions: Normal school environment. The employee may be exposed to bodily fluids, bloodborne pathogens, sick and/or contagious students. The employee may be exposed to toxic chemicals (for disinfecting) and outdoor weather conditions.
