Location: There are two (2) temporary positions based out of La Grande, OR. The majority of the work will be completed on Meadow Creek.
Duration: Both positions are expected to start June 1, 2024 and last through October 31, 2024.
What you will do:
Operate juvenile fish traps in the Grande Ronde River. Survey juvenile fish populations. Conduct electrofishing in streams. Seine juvenile fish in streams. Snorkel streams and count salmonids and other fishes in summer and winter conditions. Anesthetize fish using standard procedures. Count fish and determine species while conducting snorkeling surveys. Count, measure, weigh, and collect scales from fish collected. Collect and record data using computerized data collection station. Accurately record data on data forms. Tag wild juvenile Chinook salmon and steelhead. Implant passive integrated transponder tags in juvenile salmon and steelhead. Use computerized tagging station to record biological data. Analyze and summarize data. Download data from computerized data station to desktop computer. Enter and verify field data on desktop computer using spreadsheets and databases. Conduct summary analyses using spreadsheets and databases. The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. Working Conditions:
Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor. Position is eligible for overtime. May work weekends and long hours. Twenty percent of time spent in office during normal working hours. Requires frequent long-distance travel to study sites. Considerable travel in all types of weather. Outside work in inclement weather in cold, swift streams. Must be able to work and communicate effectively with ODFW, other government agencies, private landowners, and members of the public. Requirements/Requested Skills:
Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however, we are seeking applicants with the following experience or skills. Preference for interviews may be given to candidates with these skills and background:
Requires a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. Ability to conduct field work under a variety of weather conditions ranging from heat in summer to cold in winter. Experience conducting fish surveys, identifying adult fish species (especially salmonids) Experience operating rotary screw traps, PIT-tagging fish, conducting surveys in stream environments, and identifying juvenile fish species (especially salmonids) is desirable. Anyone who has or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences. Questions about the position?
