GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking a Wildlife Technician based out of Cody, WY. This position assists Department personnel in wildlife damage control, wildlife damage claim investigation, wildlife conflict resolution, biological sampling, and public relations in accordance with Wyoming statutes, Commission regulations, and Department policy. This position provides assistance to the Wildlife Division's Access Yes Program, helping maintain and enhance public hunting and fishing opportunities while meeting wildlife management objectives. The role will also assist with the daily functions of the regional office in a professional, efficient, and knowledgeable manner, including front counter assistance, answering phone inquiries, boating information, and collecting biological samples. Human Resource Contact: Alice Saldana / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level. Assist regional personnel with wildlife conflict situations in urban and rural settings in an appropriate manner. Humanely euthanize sick and injured wildlife. Assists game wardens in mitigating and evaluating damages by big game, game birds, and trophy game animals to crops and livestock. Routinely communicates with landowners experiencing wildlife damages. Communicate with landowners and provide information regarding wildlife conflict situations. Assist with the collection and submission of biological data, including wildlife surveys. Provide department outreach information and assistance to the public. Collect lymph nodes from harvested deer, elk, and moose using a scalpel and forceps, and record data for the Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) surveillance program. Collect and record wildlife harvest information (i.e., species, age, and sex of harvested animals and harvest location). Maintain equipment as directed. Provide department outreach information and assistance to the public. Assist Regional Access Coordinators with sign maintenance, hunting and fishing season presence & landowner relations. Communicate effectively with landowners, sportsmen, and Department personnel. Coordinate with Department personnel concerning public hunting and fishing opportunities. Provide customer service to landowners, hunters, and anglers during hunting/fishing seasons. Interprets legal land descriptions and reading of maps delineating land ownership. Respond to inquiries from the public that requires extensive knowledge and interpretation of agency operations and policies. Bonded by the state of Wyoming as a licensed agent, therefore responsible for selling and collecting funds from over-the-counter Game & Fish licenses, stamps, and interstate game tags. Routinely deal with angry and difficult people and resolve conflicts tactfully. Boat registrations, assigning HIN numbers, AIS inspections. PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:
Preference will be given to those with a four-year college degree in wildlife management, range management, or other natural resource fields. Additional related training and experience will be evaluated.
**Agency requires that the successful applicant possess a valid driver's license. KNOWLEDGE: Extensive knowledge of current Wyoming Game & Fish Department laws and hunting and fishing regulations. Well-developed oral and written communication skills. General knowledge of/and skill with computers. General knowledge of wildlife, knowledge of deer/elk anatomy. Knowledge of data recording. Knowledge of wildlife management concepts, principles, and practices. Knowledge and interpretation of legal land descriptions. Knowledge of general outdoor skills. Knowledge, skill, and ability to work in areas occupied by large carnivores including wolves, mountain lions, and grizzly bears. Skill in the safe use of handguns, shotguns, rifles, and pyrotechnical devices. Skill in strong interpersonal communication with employees, landowners, and the general public. Skill in the use of GPS and reading maps. Ability to record and manage collected data, skill in map-reading. Ability to work with minimal supervision and to be self-directed. Ability to operate four-wheel-drive truck, ATV, binoculars/spotting scope, and pull/back trailer. Ability to drive vehicles in various types of weather, terrain, and conditions. Ability to use scalpels and forceps. Ability to clarify information and resolve common problems from the public, other agencies, and department personnel. Ability to positively work with and facilitate relationships with the ranching and hunting communities and other interested individuals as a team. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: None - See "Preferences" PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS : Ability to lift 50 lbs. Ability to work outside and perform under adverse weather conditions and difficult terrain, often during long periods. Ability to walk in rough, uneven terrain with unstable footing. Ability to work weekends, holidays, early mornings, and late evenings. Will be required to work alone in the field in a rural setting. Ability to use small power and non-power hand tools. Ability to safely operate 4-wheel drive pickup, ATV, and snowmobile in various terrain and road conditions. Ability to tow bumper pull and gooseneck trailers. Travel and overnight stays may be required. NOTES:  FLSA: Non-Exempt Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check before appointment. Housing is not provided. The selected candidate must obtain housing within 15 minutes of the regional office. This is an At-Will Employee Contract position (AWEC) for 12-months, 40 hours per week.
