OBJECTIVE To obtain specialized technical skills necessary for the construction, operation and maintenance responsibilities so as to provide maximum service to the membership.
RESPONSIBILITIES Under direct supervision, from hire date through first 6 months of employment, learns and assists (as directed) in the construction and maintenance of energized distribution lines and equipment less than 250-volt potential. May work within minimum approach distance for voltage being worked. Under supervision, after first 6 months of employment, learns and assists (as directed) in the construction and maintenance of energized distribution lines and equipment less than 250-volt potential. May work within minimum approach distance for voltage being worked. Under direct supervision learns and assists (as directed) in the construction and maintenance of de-energized distribution lines and equipment greater than 250-volt potential. May not work within minimum approach distance for voltage being worked. Becomes familiar with RUS specifications, staking sheets, line construction assembles, materials, tools and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of electric lines. Becomes familiar with all equipment used in the construction and maintenance of electric lines as well as the inspections and operations of such equipment. Loads and unloads poles, transformers, wire, tools and material as directed. Maintains Commercial Drivers License. Becomes a qualified climber. Follows the BGEnergy Safety Manual as well as BGEnergy policies and procedures. Participates in assigned training programs and workshops. Assists in keeping job site in a safe and neat condition. Operates radio equipment. Drives and operates vehicle as assigned and ensures that vehicle is neat and orderly. May serve on call-out duty as "#2 man" as directed. Tasks performed shall be limited by supervision. Directs or relays member complaints and information to the proper authority. Constantly alert to the safety of others. POSITION SPECIFICATIONS Education High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
Work Experience Within one year of hire date, Line Technician 1 shall have completed a pole climbing workshop (TVPPA Lab "A" or equivalent) and any assigned correspondence courses. Employee shall maintain passing and acceptable grades set by individual course instructors. Line Technician 1 employees may be subject to a final exam and/or performance evaluation prior to achieving Line Technician 2 status. Completion of correspondence courses shall be the responsibility of employee to complete within time frame listed above.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES Ability to effectively read and follow operations, technical and safety manuals. Ability to follow directions and work with other line technicians and warehouse personnel, as assigned. Ability to communicate with other line technicians and crew chiefs and work with co-workers to solve problems. Able to complete reports and other paperwork and perform mathematical calculations. Must become certified in climbing poles and maintain this certification. Must possess and maintain a valid commercial driver's license. Must become certified in pole top and bucket truck rescue. Must have vision/color perception and ability to hear.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Required to pass a physical examination when employed. Must have sufficient health to perform the essential functions, duties and responsibilities of the job.
Occasionally (1-33%) lifts up to 100 lbs., frequently (34-66%) lifts up to 50 lbs., and continuously lifts up to 10 lbs.
Occasionally (1-33%) squats and kneels.
Required to frequently (34-66%) bend/stoop, climb poles and balance.
Must be able to use his/her hands and feet for repetitive physical tasks. Must be able to reach overhead.
WORKING CONDITIONS Exposed to noise, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, and operating equipment. Outside work under varying and at times severe weather conditions and subject to irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. This position serves on-call during emergencies and on-call rotation as assigned. Management reserves the right to disqualify employees for this position who cannot reach their regular work location from their residence within a reasonable length of time.
