The Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs plays a key role in providing strategic leadership and oversight for various aspects of student life and engagement within the university. Classification Standard Duties:
This position collaborates with campus stakeholders to enhance the overall student experience, foster a positive campus community, and support student success. Serves as one of five senior-level positions on the division's senior leadership team, provides visionary, strategic, and operational leadership for developing a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to student services. Job Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Student Success & Dean of Students, the Assistant Vice President for Student Health & Well-being will provide visionary, strategic, and operational leadership for coordination of a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to student health and wellbeing at New Mexico State University. The Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, Health & Wellness will provide strategic and managerial leadership for the following areas: Aggie Health & Wellness Center (which includes medical services; counseling & psychological services, health education) and Student Assistance Services while working in close partnership with the Office of the Dean of Students, CARE Team, Athletics, and Student Conduct and Community Standards.
The AVP will oversee the overall operation of each assigned area, including budgets, staffing, team management, talent development and succession planning, program assessment, employer, faculty and alumni outreach, strategic planning, marketing and coordination with other departments across campus. They will be expected to provide creative and results-focused leadership and strategic vision for each area, incorporating student retention based initiatives, while embracing the University's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Units in the AVP's portfolio (Aggie Health & Wellness Center (which includes medical services; counseling & psychological services, health education); Disability Access Services and Student Assistance Services —work in partnership with partners within the Division of Student Success and across campus to create and support practices, programs, and services that advance the mission of holistic student health and wellbeing across the university. The AVP must work well in a vibrant, fast-paced, and evolving environment and be capable of managing emerging knowledge and technologies, competing priorities, and changing politics. Additionally, the AVP promotes cohesion among the units and seamless collaboration around health and wellness; ensures the delivery of service with a multicultural wellness focus that is tailored for and responsive to the variety of student populations who seek these services (i.e., students of color, veterans, LGBTQ students, first-generation students, etc.); and collaborates with department leaders and university personnel on long-term facility maintenance, including renovation, expansion, replacement cycles, and ongoing maintenance.
1. Manage the effective operation of the of the units that deliver health and wellbeing services (including wraparound and basic needs services) to students fostering them to achieve success.
a. This includes devise, administer, and monitor department budgets, identify alternate revenue streams, and seek opportunities for cost savings and reductions.
b. Maintain memberships with relevant professional association and services, such as the AUCCCD, ACHA, NASPA, ACCTA, IACS, JED Foundation, and NaBITA, ACPA.
c. Actively participate in or lead divisional and university committees as appointed by the AVP/DOS and VPSS.
2. Evaluate the effectiveness of programs.
a. Develop mechanisms to receive regular student feedback on their mental and physical wellbeing and the services provided.
b. Nurture a culture of assessment within each of the departments.
c. Ensure that Health and Wellbeing units proactively engage students directly in their outreach efforts.
3. Direct the identification and resolution of barriers to student retention, making policy and procedural recommendations regarding student retention, and implementing programs to improve retention.
a. Develop, interpret, and implement policies and procedures regarding student well-being and access to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, accreditation standards, and laws.
b. Develop and steward partnership and relationships with appropriate community health and wellness organizations and providers.
c. Develop and support robust peer education programs in health and wellness education.
d. Ensure health & wellness units deliver health education and prevention content to the University community throughout the year and during hallmark events including orientations, student leader trainings, and theme weeks.
e. Utilize multiple approaches to engage the University community including in-person, online, digital, and social media.
Knowledge of university budget processes, regulations, ability to make difficult resource allocation decisions; ability to manage limited resources and deliver maximum student services
Knowledge of and familiarity with the sociological issues facing underrepresented, first-generation, and low-income persons in the university and in their communities.
Knowledge of student learning theory, retention programs, restorative practices, and continuous improvement.
Knowledge of administration and use of assessment instruments, strategic planning, high quality service.
Knowledge and experience working with higher education organizations and with Student Affairs, Student Success, and Academic Affairs areas of operations.
Sound knowledge of cultural nuances, principles, sensitivities, and applicable concepts/theories that apply to an HSI, high first-gen college community.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills that foster focused and positive, collaborative working relationships among colleagues, subordinates, faculty, staff and the overall constituency base of parents, alumni, the community and general public.
Highly effective oral, writing, meeting facilitation, and presentation communication skills.
Able to build collaborations for a more seamless curricular/co-curricular experience.

Preferred Qualifications Masters degree in a field related to health and wellbeing, including but not limited to student development, public health, counseling, social work or health care administration Ten (10) or more years of progressive fulltime experience working in directly related areas in a higher education setting Experience supervising and managing people with a record of taking a team approach and an orientation towards staff advocacy and collaboration with multiple campus partners.
