About the Work Unit The Traffic Design/Operations Unit for the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) develops project plans, specifications, and estimates for construction projects for the Denver Metro area. This unit analyzes and implements the traffic engineering and traffic operations functions, provides program support, and designs and manages traffic engineering and safety design projects.  
About the Position This position analyzes traffic design plans, conducts research to collect appropriate data, updates traffic signal timing plans, and provides guidance to local agency transportation project grant recipients. You will be responsible for applying current state and federal regulations, design specifications, and standards to develop and operate safe, economical, efficient transportation project designs.
Based on the qualifications of the selected candidate, this position will be filled at either the Engineer-in-Training III or Professional Engineer I level.
Your duties and responsibilities  will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Investigate roadway and intersection safety for all users (vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians) to identify deficiencies and develop improvements. Analyze traffic data, roadway design features, and traffic signal timing plans to improve signal coordination and operation. Perform field site investigations as needed in reviewing and responding to customer inquiries. Manage various funds, grants, and projects in all phases; write grant applications and manage grants; collaborate with Local Agencies and DRCOG to determine project scopes; provide guidance to Local Agencies for compliance with FHWA requirements and Local Agency Stewardship agreements. Lead projects using CDOT's project management tools and guidance, maintain project schedules and cost forecasts, communicate with varied internal and external stakeholders and subject matter experts, and maintain project documentation to ensure successful project delivery within established budgets and deadlines. Utilize traffic engineering fundamentals, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), Highway Safety Manual (HSM), CDOT M&S Standards and other industry accepted standards and procedures to support the planning, design and implementation of engineering projects and operation of traffic control systems. Contribute review comments pertaining to traffic and safety engineering and participate in project development meetings for a wide range of transportation projects, studies, and assessments. Other job duties as assigned.
Work Environment: Primarily 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, potential for flex time Opportunity to work from home 1-2 days a week after training and depending upon assigned projects Travel required during work hours throughout the Denver Metro area

Engineer-in-Training III Salary Range: $76,056 - $91,248/annually
Professional Engineer I Salary Range: $88,044 - $105,636/annually
Engineer-in-Training III Minimum Qualifications: Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors; y ou must include your Colorado EIT number on your online application as verification of your registration.   AND at least one (1) year of professional civil engineering work experience related to transportation. A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position. 
Preferred Qualifications The exceptional applicant will  possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:

Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position.
Highest work/personal ethics and integrity.
Knowledge of traffic signal design, traffic signal timing and coordination, traffic signal communications systems, and traffic signal control systems. Experience using traffic analysis and modeling tools such as Synchro and Highway Capacity Software. Working knowledge of state and federal regulations governing the use of public funding for transportation projects. Comprehensive knowledge and experience with the MUTCD, AASHTO Highway Safety Manual, AASHTO Roadside Design Guide, CDOT Project Development Manual, CDOT Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, and CDOT M&S Standard Plans.

Experience managing budgets to ensure cost effectiveness of projects or programs.
Effective interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
Strong time and project management skills, including prioritization and multi-tasking ability.
Excellent reasoning, investigative, analytical, and problem-solving ability.

Fluency in MSWord, MS Excel, Gmail and Google Applications, SAP, computer-aided drafting (CAD) software, project scheduling software, and the ability to quickly learn other software systems.
