The Classes Assistant helps the lead instructor with classroom management, teaching, preparation, activity clean-up, and other tasks in a classroom based day-camp setting with grade blocked students in grades K-12.
Essential Job Responsibilities Assists lead instructor with classroom management by engaging students and following behavioral intervention procedures; Facilitates hands-on science activities and leads demonstrations/projects with guidance from lead instructor; Assists lead instructor with classroom preparation and with cleaning up educational experiences to facilitate an effective learning environment; Communicates effectively with students, caregivers, co-workers, and supervisors about programming expectations and procedures; Supervises students to ensure a safe, fun, and engaging environment for up to 24 students (non-pandemic class numbers - summer 2021 will comply with state and local ordinances). Working Conditions This position is non-exempt, paid hourly; This position is a special project, full-time scheduled for 40 hours/week; This position requires working onsite at the museum location; You must be fully vaccinated and boosted for COVID-19 or qualify for an accommodation under the ADA for medical or religious reasons; Ability to bend, stoop, crawl, and sit on the floor multiple times a day; Physical Demands: 10% sitting, 70% standing, 20% lifting/carrying/pushing up to 50 lbs; Vision Demands include: Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches of less) Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more) Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors) Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point) Depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships) Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus) Environmental Demands include: Outdoor weather conditions Work near moving mechanical parts Fumes or airborne particles Toxic or caustic chemicals Risk of electric shock Noise Levels include: Very quiet (examples: forest trail, isolation booth for hearing test) Quiet (examples: library, private office) Moderate (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic) Loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment) Very loud (examples: jack hammer work, front row at rock concert) Secondary Job Responsibilities Secondary responsibilities include-but are not limited to-the following:
Provide other classroom, peer, and student support, such as sitting and connecting with an upset student or helping collect missing items; May work on overnight field trips, as needed. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to follow instructions from Classes Instructors and Classes Management; Ability to work with and communicate with diverse groups of students; Ability to learn and lead educational experiences; Strong communication skills, with an emphasis on customer service and problem-solving; Ability to adhere to confidentiality, protocol, and community agreements. Demonstrated ability to pivot between individual and team work; PREFERENCES:
Strong facilitation and presentation skills; Developed knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles; Proficient or native fluency in a second language (non-English). Education & Work Experience REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum of 6 months experience working with children, with an emphasis on safety and engagement; Demonstrated experience or ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and talents in a professional work environment. PREFERENCES:
Prior classroom, enrichment, or youth engagement experience; Demonstrated experience working in a STEAM education-based environment. Additional Requirements/Preferences; Including Licenses and Certifications REQUIREMENTS:
