Position Summary The successful candidate will provide information about the university; interview and counsel prospective students and their parents; review applications for admission to determine eligibility.
This position will have territory management responsibilities, including, but not limited to the recruitment, selection, and enrollment of prospective students from assigned geographic regions in the State of Michigan. The job requires the ability to travel and work some evenings and weekends as required. Often communication with prospective students and their families will occur outside of regular office hours. Other recruitment activities will include staffing on campus and off campus events, attending special programs, and meeting with our guests as they visit campus.
The admissions counselor may be the first and only interface prospective students have with the university, which could affect their decision to apply to the university. The recruitment and admission of students affect the financial base of the university and its academic reputation.
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
Represent the university to prospective students and their families in an assigned geographic area in the state of Michigan. Non-concurrent travel between August and November and again in the spring with the possibility of other travel throughout the year. Promote the University via college fairs, visit high schools and recruitment events in the assigned areas in addition to on-campus programs. Review applications for admission to determine eligibility. Establish rapport and manage effective relationships with a wide range of people including prospective high school and community college students, parents, and counselors/school officials as well as campus partners. Participate in the planning and implementation of on-campus and off-campus admissions, recruitment and yield events. Create and execute a recruitment strategy in conjunction with the assigned supervisor. This will include a budget and projected goals and activity annually. Conduct formal presentations on and off-campus and interact effectively and professionally with all audiences. Maintain and accurately record regular contact with prospective students, parents and other influencers using Salesforce (customer relationship management tool) and other student information systems. Must organize and maintain schedule for recruitment travel, and reading of applications. Serves as liaison between the admissions office and other University departments and committees. This position will require extended hours including some early mornings, late evenings and/or weekends and travel throughout the region. Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that complies with University policy. Other duties as assigned by the leadership team in the Office of Admissions. Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in admissions, counseling, public relations, student services or related area, including implementing programs and schedules, making formal presentations, and working with the public; experience with database, spreadsheet, desk top publishing and/or presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; may require conversational proficiency in a foreign language.
Desired Qualifications Bachelor's degree from Michigan State University. Appreciation of, a sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse environment inclusive of students, faculty and staff of many social, economic, cultural, ideological, racial and ethnic backgrounds. Two years of experience in admissions, public relations, higher education or related area preferred. Strong work ethic, a high level of professionalism, and the ability to manage multiple tasks. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Excellent customer service skills. Experience working as part of a group/team in a fast-paced environment. Ability to effectively manage quickly changing priorities. Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative. Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point. Experience using Slate or other Customer Relationship Management tool. Experience conducting presentations to diverse audiences. Experience working with secondary or post-secondary students is preferred. Critical reasoning, sound judgment and ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Familiarity with Michigan State University.
