The mission of the Office of Student Protections and Title IX (OSP) and the Equal Opportunity Compliance Office (EOCO) is to provide an equitable, inclusive, safe, supportive, and secure learning and working environment, in every school and neighborhood, in a district that is free from discrimination, harassment, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, and retaliation, ensuring that all students, faculty, staff, vendors, and visitors can thrive. To fulfill this mission the Office of Student Protections (OSP) and Title IX's / Equal Opportunity Compliance Office (OSP/EOCO) responds to, investigates, resolves, and transforms cases related to both interpersonal and systemic harm toward individuals or communities with an actual or perceived membership of protected categories under federal law and the district's nondiscrimination policy.
The Training and Prevention unit leads the implementation of CPS' and OSP's new landmark relationship education initiative Transforming Bias-based Harm across numerous district-wide training and prevention programs with a direct impact to every single student, staff member, and vendor. Job Summary:
Reporting to the Lead of Training and Prevention, the Training Specialist will support the creation and operationalization of all unit training and programmatic efforts. These efforts include supporting the implementation and maintenance of a portfolio of five (5) unique prevention programs aimed at ensuring students are developing leadership skills in the prevention and transformation of bias-based behaviors. These efforts also aim to ensure that adults are prepared not only to engage in healthy and transformative relationships with students and staff, but to be leaders in creating safe and supportive school environments. Additionally, the Training Specialist will develop and operationalize districtwide and school specific training and professional learning for staff and students that is proficient for adult learning and knowledge retention, as well as developmentally appropriate for students. The Training Specialist with be held accountable for the following responsibilities:
Training
Support the development and operationalization of all OSP/EOCO training from district-wide staff and student training to targeted school/site specific training interventions across, but not limited to, the following portfolio, while maintaining compliance with federal, local, and district regulations: Protecting Chicago's Children annual Title IX training and sexual misconduct training for staff and students Transforming Bias-based Harm Framework suite of trainings including the ABC's of OSP (accountability, belonging, and consent) and anti-discrimination training City of Chicago-required Bystander Intervention training uniquely developed and targeted to different groups: (1) Adult-focused training encompassing proper steps for recognizing and interrupting bias-based behaviors; (2) student centered training, that is developmentally appropriate across age and grade bands, focusing on interrupting bias-based behaviors and reaching out to a trusted adult in the school Employee Discrimination and Harassment required annual training, as well as specialized corrective trainings to be performed at the recommendation of Law, Office of the Inspector General (OIG), OSP, and EOCO. Deploy a wide variety of training methods to support diverse learning and processing styles Continuously update training programs to ensure that they continue to be relevant to changes in laws, regulations, policies, and rules, as well as continue to be aligned with changes to OSP/EOCO policies and procedures Maintain graphic standards of trainings to comply with CPS style guide and branding regulations Collaborate with the Offices of Student Health & Wellness, CPS Law, Safety & Security, Talent, Student Voice and other internal departments and external partners in the design, delivery and management of training plans and programs Provide technical assistance to school leaders and classroom teachers on the implementation of training and curriculum Community Engagement
Conduct on-site community engagement efforts at schools, including specialized events such as out of school time activities and Back2School Bashes Represent OSP/EOCO in work with community partners and community organizations such as the Chicago Prevention Alliance Participate in community events such as Pride Parade, Bud Biliken, and others representing OSP in partnership with Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Prevention
Support the development and operationalization of all OSP/EOCO prevention programming with an emphasis on student voice and leadership in the prevention of bias-based behaviors across a portfolio that includes but is not limited to: Civil Rights Summer Fellowship Civil Rights Scholars Program Civil Rights Student Leadership Conference Civil Rights in Action OSP Student Advisory Board Establish positive working relationships with school leadership and key staff members in order to advocate effectively with schools on behalf of students. Provide staffing support for prevention programming efforts such as student field trips and other experiential learning opportunities Work with key stakeholders such as school administrators in conducting needs assessments and collecting feedback for prevention programming revisions and new offerings Design and develop pathways for youth voice and leadership in the development of prevention programming Supervise student workers when applicable Create differentiated pathways of participation for students with IEP/504 plans Ensure all prevention programming curriculums are developmentally appropriate and in alignment with CPS standards and values Develop metrics for the evaluation of prevention programming to test the efficacy of learning tied with long term goals in schools such as reduction in case counts Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Commitment to youth voice and youth leadership development Knowledge of anti-bias, anti-racist, and anti-adultist pedagogy and andragogy Team collaboration skills Passion for, commitment to, and urgency toward accomplishment of goals and objectives Effective inner group and outgroup communication and facilitation skills Sensitivity toward trauma-informed practices Strong service and support orientation towards schools and school communities Time coordination and time management skills Ability to transform educational research into deliverable content, support and practice tools A high degree of cultural competence and experience in cross-cultural communication Deploy a wide variety of training methods to support diverse learning and processing styles. Proficiency with Microsoft Office/Google Suite, specifically Excel/Sheets, PowerPoint, Word/Docs. Curate and coordinate existing professional development content in partnership with subject matter experts internally and externally. Ability to work some weeknights and weekends to support training, programming, and community engagement efforts In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Training Specialist must possess the following qualifications: Education Required: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required. Master's degree in a related field, such as Youth Development, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Peace and Conflict Resolution, Social Work, Community Psychology, etc. preferred Experience Required: Minimum of two (2) years professional experience, including experience related to violence prevention and youth leadership Experience working with youth in school or educational settings settings is preferred Valid Driver's License and vehicle access preferred Must be able to travel to various locations around the city and work flexible hours, including evening hours and occasional weekends Conditions of Employment
As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:
• Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency - Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. The Chicago residency requirement does not apply to temporary/part-time positions, however, all CPS employees must be residents of Illinois.
• Be Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19 - Unless approved for a medical or religious exemption, all employees are required to be up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccinations, including boosters, and to submit proof of vaccination to the district within 30 days of hire. "Up-to-date" on vaccination is defined as being at least two weeks past all primary vaccine doses and any applicable boosters. Unvaccinated staff with an approved exemption must submit to weekly testing.
