The Opportunity A special education paraprofessional plans, prepares, and assists in the delivery of instruction to students, particularly those with special education needs. The special education paraprofessional collaborates with other members of the instructional team in order to ensure students with diagnosed needs are receiving appropriate instruction.
Key Responsibilities 
80% - Instructional Assistance
Provides assistance in innovative and CCSS-based lessons Meets regularly with instructors to discuss their lesson plans and the instructional adaptations needed for SPED students Assists with maintaining classroom environment based on principles of positive youth development Ensures instruction is adapted to students' special needs Provides targeted instruction for small groups of students that have diagnosed SPED needs Meets with students regularly to ensure they are working towards their goals Keeps track of student progress towards academic goals Utilizes technology on a regular and consistent basis 20% - Administrative Duties
Follows directives of Coordinator of Special Education Services to maintain compliance with all SPED rules and regulations Communicates necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and student needs Is available for families of students with special needs as needed Reports any concerns to Director of Academics and/or Special Education Coordinator Attends meetings pertaining to IEPS, trainings, transitions, and other special education related topics The Skills You'll Need Success in the SPED Paraprofessional role will require a clear alignment to LAYCCA's mission, core values and commitments to supporting older youth and young adults in receiving their GED, industry training, and industry recognized certifications.
The ideal candidate will also bring most of the following skills, attributes and experiences:
Competent in leading classes and meetings, with a proactive approach to multitasking and initiative-taking. Proficient in computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace. Excellent attention to detail, paired with strong organizational, planning, and time management abilities. Committed to the principles of positive youth development and equipped with robust interpersonal skills. Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including occasional nights, weekends, and other non-standard hours. Knowledge of Common Core State Standards and educational technology, along with an understanding of social media's role in education. Spanish fluency, a Bachelor's Degree, and experience in Special Education are preferred. Experience working with opportunity youth, especially those with special needs, is advantageous. The People The SPED Paraprofessional will report directly to the SPED Coordinator. This person will also work closely with students, staff, and the broader community on a daily basis. As over 50% of our school population identifies as Latine or Hispanic, this person must be able to effectively communicate in both English and Spanish.
