POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under MNA's Director of Governmental and Community Relations, this position will work in a team of Political Organizers who educate and mobilize nurses and staff to become active in the electoral and policy arenas. The Political Organizer will work with the team to plan, implement and evaluate the political, legislative, and community initiatives of MNA to further the goals of nurses at the local, state, and federal levels.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Utilize organizing conversations to empower and mobilize workers to build their political power to positively impact MNA legislative and electoral campaigns. Collaborate with assigned field team to identify and implement political tactics that help to achieve field and political goals. Build, train, and maintain network of political activists within your assigned facilities and teams. Regularly hold one on one meetings, participate in member meetings and take part in facility rounding within assigned facilities and teams. Work with the team to implement member to member and member to public independent expenditure electoral programs with tactics including but not limited to electronic communication, text and phone banking, worksite campaigns, door knocking and virtual and in person meetings. Provide briefings and education for staff and members around legislative, electoral, and issue-based work; Work with the team to develop and implement legislative organizing plans, working with the assigned field teams to grow member participation and action to support MNA's legislative goals. Educate members on electoral and legislative processes including early vote programs, party and MNA screening and endorsement processes, legislative deadlines and policies, etc. Coordinate and guide the work of assigned regional screening and endorsement committee and facilitate communication on endorsements between regional groups, MNA's Political Committee and the MNA Board of Directors. Attend and represent MNA at various events and meetings, coalition tables, press events, fundraisers and other community events Track and report event participation, new member recruitment, legislative and electoral goals and other metrics Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Required: Minimum of 2 cycles of paid electoral campaign experience with a labor union, community organization or candidate campaign Understanding of electoral and legislative processes Knowledge of campaign finance laws and restrictions Demonstrated ability to create and implement successful electoral plans Experience with NGP VAN and Labor Action Network (LAN) Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; Demonstrated commitment to social justice and empowering working people to build political power Direct experience in field organizing for election or other issue campaigns Automobile and valid driver's license 1-2 years' experience in previous labor, political, or community organizing Ability to travel, and to work nights and weekends on occasion Preferred: Experience using the organizing conversation Ability to identify and assess members on organizing scale Previous experience within both unions and healthcare Motivated self-starter who has the ability to learn without heavy supervision Ability to think strategically and meet many/changing deadlines Experience in leadership, project management, organizing, and cross departmental collaboration Ability to listen actively, frame issues, and lead workers through fights; patient in pressure situations Demonstrated ability to multitask, use databases and technology Demonstrated ability to facilitate projects and teams Proven success in high paced and time sensitive projects Other combinations of education and experience which could provide the necessary knowledge and skills will be evaluated individually. SALARY: Per the MNASO Local 1, Unit 2 Contract Agreement, starting salary is $81,390.
