UFCW Local 5 Lead Organizer Based in Martinez, CA UFCW Local 5 is a 25,000-member affiliate of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union based in the Bay Area. UFCW 5 members work in a broad range of industries in the private sector of the economy.
UFCW 5 is looking to continue to grow its membership in core industries of non-food retail, retail food, retail drug, cannabis, and agricultural industries. We have recently won campaigns at some of the largest national retailers like REI, Barnes & Noble, Half-Priced Books and Eaze cannabis delivery. We are seeking people who are dedicated to building a movement of workers to uplift the lives of workers in the Bay Area and beyond.
Key Responsibilities: Leading, managing, coaching, and directing organizing staff on campaigns, including training, developing, and holding accountable organizing staff moving turf. Developing and executing a plan to move turf and build winning campaigns. Leading organizers through example, including worker outreach, building relationships, leadership development, building committees, holding meetings, conducting actions, and inspiring and motivating workers to mobilize in the struggle. Identifying and creating opportunities for campaigns in line with the organizational vision. Required Qualifications: Demonstrated leadership ability. Experience and success in union recognition campaigns (NLRB, card check, etc), contract campaigns, building bottom-up rank-and-file campaigns, and managing organizing staff. Demonstrated commitment to economic, racial, and social justice. Ability and willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends as needed. Excellent listening, oral and written communication skills. Basic computer literacy and ability to learn the organization's technology tools. Ability to work independently as well as with a team. Ability to be coached and trained, to be held accountable, and to struggle through difficulty. Willingness to conduct work site and home visits. Resourcefulness, persistence, loyalty, integrity and strong skills in planning, time-management and problem-solving are a must. Demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Possession of a valid U.S. driver's license, proof of auto insurance, and an automobile for business use. Compensation:
Salary is commensurate with experience (range: $72,836 to $104,052); benefits include employer-paid health, dental, vision, and life insurance (including dependent coverage); auto and cell phone allowance; generous paid time off (12 paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave), and secure retirement. This is a full-time, salaried, overtime-exempt position.
