Full job description The Assistant Ombudsperson is an entry level position that plays a vital role in serving the entire University of Iowa community, including students, faculty, staff, and all members of UI Healthcare. Our mission is to provide a comprehensive dispute resolution service that is confidential, impartial, informal, and independent. Ensuring that every member of the University of Iowa community receives fair and equitable treatment.
This position is eligible for a combination of on-campus and remote work within Iowa once training has been completed. Work arrangement options will be discussed during the hiring process. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.
Specific Job Duties and Tasks Provide conflict management services to students, staff and faculty and identify and notify administrators of trends on campus. Apply essential knowledge of, and experience with, current University policies, procedures and personnel in resolving complaints, and assist inquirers in interpreting University policies and procedures. Bring to the attention of those in authority and if necessary, the entire University community, any concerns/issues regarding University policy, procedures, and personnel that should be addressed. Advise on-campus committees regarding conflict resolution, and participate in ombuds outreach activities on campus, regionally and nationally. Provide conflict management services to staff, students, faculty and others by listening, offering information on university policies and processes, identifying other resources, developing options, coaching, negotiating, and mediating. Offer a safe environment to discuss any concerns or issues. Provide impartial and confidential consultation to members of the University community who are aggrieved or concerned about an issue. Remain independent and impartial, and exercise good judgment. Handles all information in a confidential manner. May provide functional supervision to support staff. Effectively collaborate with all other offices and resources on campus. Maintain awareness of a variety of impacts regarding conflicts and concerns. Work effectively with all visitors and campus resources. Ensure that the integrity of the office is maintained by all ombuds office staff through independence, fair process, impartiality, confidentiality, and timely attention to the resolution of issues while treating people with dignity and respect. To obtain the full job description including key areas of responsibility, technical competencies, and desirable qualifications, please contact Jade Rogers at Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required Required one year of experience in conflict management, law, ethnic studies, social science, psychology, education, social work, public administration, healthcare, alternative dispute resolution, and/or human resources in higher education, or related field. Minimum of one to three years of experience in performing office administration tasks effectively and efficiently in support of individuals and/or teams. Demonstrates an extensive proficiency in effectively and efficiently processing a high volume of information and the ability to develop and follow consistent processes with a high level of accuracy, organization, prioritization, and timeliness. Demonstrates a working knowledge of and ability to: Use office support tools available on the desktop (e.g. calendaring, word processing, email, presentation software and spreadsheets); Produce documents that are clear and well-presented, using various techniques to disseminate and gather information while maintaining confidentiality; and adapt writing to different audiences; Utilize communication techniques and relationship building skills that enable one to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner; Demonstrated experience with, and commitment to, maintaining confidentiality and integrity Demonstrate willingness to engage with people from different backgrounds Demonstrated experience pursuing courses of action that may challenge persons in positions of authority Candidates must be recognized as good listeners and as informed, fair-minded problem-solvers The candidate must be willing to be an active member of the International Ombudsman Association and to participate in continued professional development Desired Qualifications Master's degree Successful completion of the IOA Foundations Course A minimum of 40 Hours of Basic Mediation Training Training in facilitation and/or conflict coaching Experience working in an Ombuds office Position and Application details:
